Where to Stay Near Zion

Where you sleep decides how your Zion days actually go — mainly how close you are to the shuttle and how far ahead you need to book.

Zion Lodge

The only lodging inside Zion National Park itself, sitting right on the Zion Canyon Shuttle line partway up the canyon. The original lodge was designed in 1925 by Gilbert Stanley Underwood, the architect behind several other classic National Park Service lodges, and built by the Union Pacific Railroad; a 1966 fire destroyed the main building, which was rebuilt and still anchors the property today alongside 40 Western-style "Deluxe Cabins" with stone fireplaces and log-truss ceilings, plus 81 motel-style rooms. As of January 1, 2025, the concession is run by Destination Zion Lodge, a POWDR Corp company, ending Xanterra's 53-year run operating the property since 1972. Reservations open 13 months in advance on the first of the month, and prime dates (spring and fall weekends especially) can sell out within minutes of opening, not days — if staying inside the park is the priority, mark your calendar for the exact date your travel month unlocks. Pets are not allowed at Zion Lodge, service animals excepted. Dining on-site includes the sit-down Red Rock Grill and the more casual Castle Dome Café.

Springdale

Right outside the South Entrance, walking distance to the park, with the free Springdale Shuttle linking every hotel to the pedestrian entrance. This is the largest concentration of lodging near Zion, spanning full-service hotels, smaller inns and bed-and-breakfasts, and vacation rentals, which means real range in price and style, but also the least advance flexibility: rates climb and availability tightens fast for spring and fall weekends, and the town's small footprint caps how much new supply can ever be added. Booking early is less about getting a deal and more about having any choice at all.

Nearby Towns

Hurricane, La Verkin, Rockville, and Virgin sit roughly 10 to 30 minutes from the South Entrance by car. Rates are typically lower than Springdale and last-minute availability is more realistic, but you'll drive in and find parking each day rather than walk to the shuttle. Rockville and Virgin are the closest of the group and share some of Springdale's small-town character; Hurricane and La Verkin have more of the chain-hotel and highway-commercial feel.

St. George

About 45 minutes from the South Entrance, with the widest selection of national chain hotels in the region and the closest regional airport. Less charm, more inventory — a practical choice for larger groups, last-minute trips, or anyone flying in and renting a car.

If You Can't Get In Where You Want

Zion Lodge and Springdale are the two tightest bookings near the park; if both are full for your dates, working outward through the nearby towns and then St. George almost always turns up something, especially the further out you're willing to stay. Camping is another option entirely — see the Zion camping guide for campgrounds inside and near the park.

Zion Lodging FAQ

Is there lodging inside Zion National Park?

Yes — Zion Lodge, on the Zion Canyon Shuttle line inside the park, is the only lodging inside Zion itself. It's a small, historic property (not a hotel chain) with 81 motel-style rooms and 40 Western cabins, and it sells out well ahead of the busy spring and fall seasons.

How far in advance can I book Zion Lodge?

Reservations open 13 months ahead, on the first of the month — book a stay in October, for example, by watching for the booking window to open the previous September 1st. Prime spring and fall weekend dates can sell out within minutes of opening.

Who operates Zion Lodge?

As of January 1, 2025, Destination Zion Lodge, a POWDR Corp company, holds the National Park Service concession contract, ending Xanterra Parks & Resorts' 53-year run operating the property since 1972.

Are pets allowed at Zion Lodge?

No — pets aren't permitted at Zion Lodge, with the exception of qualified service animals for guests with disabilities. Pet policies at hotels and vacation rentals in Springdale and nearby towns vary property by property.

How far in advance should I book a Zion hotel in Springdale?

For Springdale in peak season (spring and fall, plus summer weekends), book as early as your travel dates are set — several months ahead is common for the best selection, since the town's small footprint limits total supply. Nearby towns like Hurricane or La Verkin, and St. George further out, tend to have more last-minute availability.

Should I stay in Springdale or drive in each day?

Springdale's biggest advantage is the free town shuttle straight to the park's pedestrian entrance — no driving, no parking. Staying further out (Hurricane, La Verkin, St. George) usually means lower rates and easier booking, at the cost of a daily drive and finding parking near the entrance.

What if everything in Springdale and Zion Lodge is booked for my dates?

Check the nearby towns first — Hurricane, La Verkin, Rockville, and Virgin are all a short drive from the South Entrance and typically have more open availability. St. George, about 45 minutes out, has the largest supply of chain hotels. Camping is another option — see the Zion camping guide.

Is lodging near Zion pet-friendly?

It varies by property. Zion Lodge does not allow pets except service animals. In Springdale and nearby towns, it's a mix of pet-friendly and pet-free hotels and vacation rentals — always confirm directly with the property before booking.

What's the history behind Zion Lodge's design?

The original lodge was designed in 1925 by architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood, known for his work on several classic National Park Service lodges, and built by the Union Pacific Railroad as part of its early push to bring rail tourists into Zion. A fire destroyed the main building in 1966; it was rebuilt and still anchors the property today alongside the original Western-style cabins.
