About

The Emerald Pools Trail offers one of Zion National Park's most versatile hiking experiences, with options ranging from an easy stroll to a moderate climb. This popular trail system leads visitors through a series of three distinct pools, each carved into the sandstone by seasonal waterfalls cascading from the cliffs above.

Starting from the trailhead across from Zion Lodge, hikers can choose their own adventure. The Lower Pool trail provides the easiest option at just over a mile round trip, perfect for families with young children or those seeking a gentle walk. The paved path winds through cottonwoods and alongside the Virgin River before reaching the first pool, where water trickles down the cliff face creating a misty overhang.

More ambitious hikers can continue to the Middle and Upper Pools, adding elevation and distance for increasingly dramatic rewards. The Middle Pool trail climbs stone steps and sandy paths, while the Upper Pool route becomes steeper and more rugged, ultimately reaching a stunning amphitheater where waterfalls plunge into deep green pools during peak flow seasons.

Water flow varies dramatically by season, with spring snowmelt creating the most impressive waterfalls while late summer and fall may see only modest trickles. Winter hiking remains popular despite reduced water flow, as the cooler temperatures make the climbing more comfortable. The entire trail system typically takes one to two hours depending on which pools visitors choose to explore.

Located directly in Zion Canyon and accessible via the park shuttle system, the Emerald Pools Trail serves as an ideal introduction to Zion's diverse landscape. The trailhead's convenient location near Zion Lodge makes it easy to combine with other canyon activities or squeeze in during a busy park visit.

Fantastic views on the trail to the middle pool in particular. The trail views were better than the pool views but all were gorgeous. Zion is beauty on beauty on beauty. . Middle pool trail is considerably easier than the upper pool trail, despite both ranked as moderate on park guides. Went in March 2026 and did middle, then upper, then lower. The mist from walking under the waterfall on the lower pool trail cooled us off after our hike.

Trail well maintained and an easy hike until you get to the falls. Do the upper and lower, but be prepared for some climbing.

Spent a couple days in Zion and this was my favorite trail. Great views, challenging (but well maintained) trail, and the feeling of getting to the top pool and eating a well deserved lunch next to a beautiful waterfall will stick with me for a long time.
