We ended our Utah vacation with a delicious meal with scenic views at Black Sage. From appetizers to dessert, everything tasted phenomenal. Although pricey, you can tell the chef(s) put a lot of thought and care into the menu. Our server, Anna, was very friendly and knowledgeable. The shittake mushroom passable plate was to die for. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their entrees - walleye, roasted poblano, bolognese. Dessert is a MUST. We had the carrot cake and s’more tart. I highly recommend Black Sage for a special occasion dinner.
Our experience started on a bad note. We called the restaurant to see if we could be a little late or if they had seating at 8 (our reservation was at 7:30) and were told the chef said we could show up at 7:30 or the next day. So, I hurried, and we ended up showing up 10 minutes late. I looked it up and saw that the website states there is a 15-minute grace window during which you will not be charged the fee for missing, and we were within that period.
When we were seated, we were told the chef had requested that we order everything right away, as the kitchen was closing (the restaurant closes at 9, and there were only 2 other couples seated on the patio). It felt incredibly rude, and we immediately felt rushed. This was supposed to be a nice date night and dinner after a day of hiking, and nothing about it felt like elevated dining. The patio was basic, with a stain on my seat; there was no ambiance, and bees kept attacking the food.
I thought the food would be a saving grace, since the egg roll appetizer was alright. However, the entrees were mediocre and not worth the price. (Note: if you have to bacon-wrap something, what are you hiding? Does meatloaf really need to be bacon wrapped?) Everything about the dinner was way too rich, and the salmon was overcooked.
We asked about the wines and whether there were natural wines to choose from. When the server came back after asking the chef, we were told, point-blank, "no," with no alternatives offered. This seems a little underwhelming for a restaurant that claims to be farm-to-table and sourcing from local vendors, when a natural winery exists down the road.
Overall, it was really disappointing, and the chef appears to care more about getting off early than accommodating guests during business hours. The saving grace was the waiter, Orion, who did his best. Black Sage left a bitter taste in our mouths.
Black Sage Open Sky Resort hosts a beautiful glamping-style setting restaurant. We had a birthday dinner here—the space is gorgeous and the staff warm and friendly. The food was fine for the occasion, though not particularly standout. Worth it for a special celebration more than an everyday meal.
Black sage is by far the best restaurant in southern Utah. I was a former owner of a high-end restaurant I know what it takes to run a fine dining establishment and West really knows his stuff. The service is excellent the food was amazing and the ambience just wrapped it up in a beautiful package because my son took me there for my 74th birthday and it was lovely. He's very picky about his restaurants as well and he was quite impressed and it takes a lot to impress him.
We had an incredible experience at Black Sage. We were a bachelorette party of 6, and our server Ben and the rest of the staff went above and beyond to make us feel special and catered to. We had a private room with a view (that we didn't even ask for but were so grateful!) so it was very quiet and intimate for us. Ben was prompt, patient with all of our questions, and went out of his way to take care of us. His recommendations and knowledge were spectacular. The drinks, appetizers, dinner and desserts were absolutely delicious and looked beautiful as well. Ben went out of his way to take a nice picture of us, print it, and have the whole staff sign it to congratulate me on my upcoming wedding. We all left incredibly happy, so thank you so much to the staff at Black Sage for making it an unforgettable experience!
