About

St. George is the regional hub for southwestern Utah, about 46 miles — roughly an hour's drive — from Zion's South Entrance via SR-9 or I-15. It's by far the largest city near the park, with a population well over 100,000 and one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the country, and it offers something none of Zion's smaller gateway towns can: St. George Regional Airport (SGU), served by Delta, United, and American with connections through Phoenix, Dallas, Salt Lake City, or Denver.

For visitors flying in, renting a car, or wanting the full range of hotel brands, restaurants, hospitals, and big-box shopping, St. George is the logical base, even at the cost of a longer daily drive to the park. It also works well as a hub for combining Zion with a broader Utah itinerary — Bryce Canyon, the Grand Canyon's North Rim, and Snow Canyon State Park are all within a couple of hours — and its own attractions, including the historic Dixie downtown and red-rock desert reserves at the city's edge, give travelers reasons to spend a day here on either end of a Zion trip.

Getting Here

St. George Regional Airport is the closest commercial airport to Zion with major-carrier service, though nearly all flights connect through a hub city. From the airport or downtown St. George, it's about an hour's drive to the park's South Entrance via SR-9.

Where To Stay

St. George has the fullest range of lodging in the region, from budget chains to full-service resorts, along with the restaurant and shopping variety a small gateway town can't match. It's the right call for multi-night stays, larger groups, or trips combining Zion with other parks in the region.
