Hurricane, Utah
About
Hurricane sits about 25 miles west of Zion's South Entrance on SR-9, a 25-to-30 minute drive on a normal weekday morning (plan on 40-50 minutes during peak-season weekend traffic). Unlike the small gateway towns closer to the park, Hurricane is a real city of roughly 20,000 residents with a full commercial strip, and that scale is exactly its appeal: national chain hotels here — Hampton Inn, Wingate, La Quinta, Days Inn, Super 8, and others — routinely run 40-60% cheaper than comparable rooms in Springdale, especially during peak spring and fall seasons when canyon-side rates push past $300 a night.
Hurricane also has its own outdoor draws beyond being a budget base: Sand Hollow State Park and Quail Creek State Park, both known for red-rock reservoirs and OHV terrain, sit just outside town, along with several golf courses. For travelers willing to trade a longer morning drive for lower nightly rates and more dining and shopping options, Hurricane is the practical choice.
Beyond Zion
Sand Hollow State Park and Quail Creek State Park, both a short drive from central Hurricane, offer red-rock reservoirs for boating and swimming, plus OHV riding areas — a useful complement for visitors splitting a trip between Zion's trails and some water time.
Where To Stay
Hurricane has the largest concentration of budget-to-midrange chain lodging near Zion, including extended-stay options with in-room kitchens that cut down on meal costs over a multi-night trip. Rates here typically undercut Springdale by a wide margin, particularly during high season.
