About

Black Desert Golf Course stands at the top of desert golf. It offers an amazing experience that goes far beyond a typical round. Tom Weiskopf designed this championship course. It winds through dramatic red rock formations and black lava fields. As a result, it creates a stunning backdrop that makes every hole feel like a work of art. The course challenges players with well-crafted holes. However, it remains playable for golfers of all skill levels.

All-Inclusive Golf Experience

What truly sets Black Desert apart is its all-inclusive approach to hospitality. Green fees include not just golf but a complete experience:

  • Free food and non-alcoholic beverages throughout the day

  • Access to an excellent practice facility with TrackMan technology

  • A caddie assigned to each group

The practice areas include a beautiful driving range, dedicated chipping area, and large putting surface. Therefore, players can warm up or work on their game after the round.

Exceptional Service and Location

The attention to detail extends from the perfect course conditions to the warm hospitality of the staff. Many visitors describe it as one of their best golf experiences ever. For example, they praise everything from the bag drop service and shuttle system to the quality of the included food. The course has also proven itself as a premier tournament venue. In fact, it hosts competitive events with the same level of excellence.

Black Desert sits in Ivins, about 15 minutes northwest of St. George. Therefore, it serves as an ideal addition to a southern Utah golf trip. The area offers several other excellent courses, making it a true golf destination. For travelers who combine outdoor adventures with golf, the course provides a luxurious contrast to hiking in nearby Snow Canyon State Park. Additionally, you can make the hour drive to Zion National Park.

Black Desert is THE penultimate golf experience in Utah! Now, let me start by saying that the course itself isn't necessarily the most interesting in the area. There are others with greater elevation changes and more dramatic views (not to say that the views here aren't impressive -- they certainly are). That aside, it is still a fantastic course, and I didn't find anything left to be desired here -- the whole experience is overwhelmingly positive! The course is thoughtfully designed and carefully maintained. There are many challenges presented by the course, the most predominant being the lava rocks bordering every Fairway. A fortuitous bounce will occasionally create cause for celebration, but mishits are often lost among the crevices. The risk is balanced by the shape of the fairways; they all offer a relatively safe shot. Some fairways require some decision-making; driver isn't always the best option. A couple offer high-risk, high-reward scenarios, including a drivable par 4 on which most of the green is hidden behind a sandy desert hill, with little room to miss right! If you play smart, this course can be beginner-friendly. Bunkers are placed as one would expect -- inconveniently. They're clean, some are quite deep, and the sand is very fine. Exactly what I would expect from a course of this caliber. Fairways and greens alike are carefully shaped in all three dimensions. It's not particularly difficult to read the greens, but many putts absolutely require a precise balance between line and speed! Fortunately, included with green fees is a forecaddie. This is one of the reasons Black Desert is fantastic. Without an extra fee, a forecaddie will accompany your group on the round, give you aim points, distances, and lines, and clean up the bunkers behind you (and even place food orders and possibly hit a celebrity shot). You still get a modern electric cart with a screen which gives you distances and diagrams of fairways and greens. Your food and non-alcoholic beverages are also included! The tacos are fantastic, no matter which ones you get. Finally, green fees include access to: The EXPANSIVE practice facility. The driving range is equipped with Trackman, and has bunkers and pins placed as you might find them on the course (I enjoyed hitting chip shots to an 80-yard pin that was only 10 yards beyond a bunker). The putting green is TWO ACRES, with all sorts of undulations and obstacles. There's also a chipping area, complete with a deep bunker to practice out of. It's the most impressive practice facility I've ever seen, by a country mile! My recommendation: show up to the resort at least two hours before your tee time. Browse the large, modern pro shop before checking in. For your first visit, you'll get a bag tag as a gift, then receive an escorted to the range where they'll go over the facilities and inclusions. From there, grab a bite at the restaurant by the green (but don't overdo it -- you'll have two opportunities during your round to get more food from the other on-course restaurant, and a snack/beverage cart will find you too). Move on to your practice/warm up, loosen up, and your caddie will find you before your round starts to take you to the first tee. After the round, head to the 19th hole, and be prepared for some feedback from the poolside gallery! All in all, I don't think they could offer a better experience. I will certainly be back!

Tried to book a time on line. Website says they are aerating or something along those lines. Only time is 4:26 pm. No problem, I’ll just play 9 holes because it will be dark in 2 1/2 hours. Click on 9 hole option and nothing happens. Ok I’ll click 18 holes since that’s my only option and maybe they’ll give me reduced rate. No option to click on resort guest so I click on visitor since that’s my only choice. Cost for 2 players is $600 plus tax plus now I have to pay a caddie? Really? I call the course and they say “sorry sir nothing we can do”. In a nutshell I’d have to pay probably $750 when all said and done to not even finish..maybe 12 holes, on a course under repair? No thanks. Treat resort guests better. Have a reduced rate when it’s obvious the player can’t finish. Why punish them for a late tee time. Reduce your rates when you’re repairing the course. That’s just common sense. Rip off. Maybe I’ll play some day but not this time!

I’ve been very lucky in life to have played multiple Top 100 courses, including Pebble & Spyglass. With that said, there hasn’t been any course that has felt as premium as Black Desert. For a reasonable price you get: A Top 100 course & PGA stop, access to a Trackman range & incredible practice facility, a caddie, and after the round you receive a bag tag. It was an awesome experience and one of my favorite courses ever. Can’t wait to come back.
